Why did you need a 180 turn around?

I’d been clean and sober for 7 years and was overweight, out of shape and was lacking purpose and drive in lots of different areas.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

  • Waistline

  • How important it is that eat well and exercise

  • Helping and caring for others

What has been your highlight?

Seeing the amount of people coming through 180 as I’ve been here from the start. It saves lives – and it all happens in a gym. I’ve got new great friendships – positively influencing

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

It’s not the best thing I’ve done in the past three years, it’s the best thing I’ve done in my life.  It’s helped me with my mental health, diet, social skills. Its become a new way of life!

“I had been in addiction for years and tried to get clean a couple of times but always hated myself, I was 1 month clean and was introduced to CrossFit, that was 3 months ago since then I have found a purpose in life, made real friends, I actually like myself today, I have got the fittest I have been in years and even lost 2 and half stone.

I love coming down the gym now even when not training I help out and cheer the other lads on.

A big thing for me was my mental health I suffer with PTSD from military service and was on all sorts of medications I am now off all of them, my mental well-being has improved so much I feel like a new man, this has been the biggest change in my life thanks to 180 project and CrossFit, I have also learnt a lot about myself and got that fighting spirit back I used to have.”

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

My life was a mess. I couldn’t stop drinking and tried everything.  I was losing my family, my life and my will to live.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

I was disgusted in myself and I got to a point where I just didn’t want to carry on. 18 months ago I was driving down the motorway and I’d run out of ideas and didn’t know where else to turn. I wanted it all to end. I was crying, and for the first time I cried out to God. When I got off the motorway I rang my friend who I hadn’t spoken to in 10 years. I told him that I needed help and he was more or less waiting at my house when I got home. He then took me to the 180 project and said that they could help me and it was there that I met great friends.

What has been your highlight?

18 months ago I was in hospital… my liver and kidneys were shot at, and just a few weeks ago I came 4th in the UK in the CrossFit open competition for my age category. I would never have been able to do this without the encouragement from friends and peers down at 180. They encouraged and pushed me to do things I never thought I could do! This has translated to all areas of my life.

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

There’s nothing else like this. Believe me I have tried!

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

I had been in recovery for 19 years and was doing everything I needed to do to stay spiritually and emotionally well. But, I began to get really conscious about my weight.  I was missing a key part of recovery. It’s not just about being mentally, spiritually and emotionally well-  physical health is as equally important. If I hadn’t of tackled that, then it would of only been a matter of time until my self esteem and confidence took a knock... and physically I was at risk of health complications. So, ‘Physically’ I needed a 180.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

I’m fitter, healthy and don’t take my physical health for granted.

What has been your highlight?

I started CrossFit in 2015 and alongside some other guys in recovery we realised the difference an adapted CrossFit programme could make to people who were caught up in a cycle of drugs, alcohol, crime and prison. So my highlight has been setting up the 180 Project and seeing that cycle being broken.  The 180 project is transforming lives!

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

Give it a go! Do not underestimate the need to look after your physical health as part of a positive recovery. Not only did I lose weight and prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes , but my mental and emotional well-being rocketed to a new level. It works!

  • I Have stopped all the drugs and smoking too

  • My confidence and self-esteem has improved dramatically

  • My outlook on life has changed and I am interested in taking care of myself physically and mentally -  thanks to 180!

What has been your highlight?

To really feel part of the 180project....I have met and made some really healthy friends and relationships

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

I would say what’s the worst thing that can happen - give it a go. It can only improve your life as it has done with mine. I love the time I spend down at the gym and with the 180 team!

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

My life had spiralled out of control because of addiction. Because of the fear and isolation I felt and my lack of self-worth, I was struggling to find the will to carry on.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

  • My physical health has improved greatly.

  • My confidence has risen to a level I could never have imagined and it has helped me face the ups and downs of life in a more positive way.

  • My diet is the best it’s ever been down to the 180 training.

What has been your highlight?

There’s been so many highlights! But entering the comp with the police and making it to podium was such a personal achievement.

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

From day 1 I found something that gives me a healthy high without the consequences. It has helped me grow in so many different aspects of my life. A big part of the 180 Project is the camaraderie… everyone is equal. I have never felt judged and the 180 team have pushed me and encouraged me to be the best me from the start. Thank you 180 project!

Now

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

After getting clean I was attending my local gym to try and get fit and healthy. But, very quickly I got bored and lost motivation. However since starting the 180 project I really enjoy working out with the guys. I’m  getting and staying fit

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

  • Not only have I found my motivation, it has translated over to lots of things in my life.

  • My fitness and stamina are improving every week.

  • My diet is a lot better than it was and my peers at 180 also give me tips and suggestions.

What has been your highlight?

My highlight is being asked to compete in born survivor along with my peers, but more importantly being fit enough to complete it.

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

All I would say is give it a try, this programme helps you in all other areas in your life- you would be surprised (I know I was). As well as getting fitter I have made some real friends who want the best for me.

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

I had lost my purpose in life and I wanted to reclaim my self-respect and self-worth. I wanted to become somebody who my family could be proud of again.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

  • My mental attitude has improved

  • My physical attitude has changed, alongside my willingness and stamina to complete the CrossFit sessions.

  • I’ve lost negative feelings such as guilt and shame, and I’ve started to like myself again.

What has been your highlight?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it has to be completing born survivor with my friend. I managed to face every obstacle and finish the whole 10k, bearing in mind I’m 57 years old!

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

Just keep doing it, you may not immediately like it, but the benefits are definitely worth it. Thank you 180, you have changed my life.

Why did you volunteer for 180?

I have trained in gyms all my adult life but never really seen the results or particularly enjoyed it. I just did it because I needed too.

Lindsey knew I went to the gym and she kept telling me how good CrossFit was and I should give it a go. I gave in eventually and did a few classes. Then Robin asked me to take part in a 180 class.

I was not prepared for what happened next !

I soon became part of a big family. I find it very difficult to put into words what happens when you join a 180 class.

The 180 classes are not just a workout – there is a feel good atmosphere in the room, everyone works hard but they are still smiling and encouraging each other. Its special. I was soon engrossed in the 180 Project. I became friends with everyone and really enjoyed being part of the team.

 What has been your highlight?

The highlight for me is seeing a new group come into the box who look a bit nervous and apprehensive at first, and then watching them grow in confidence and develop into an athlete….and more importantly grow as a person. It is absolutely priceless. I often sit back and just watch what happens – often with a tear in my eye – realising that I have played a very small part improving someone else’s life.

What would you say to someone who was thinking of volunteering for 180?

Often in life you may get a fleeting feel good factor from buying material things, but where it’s really at, is helping other people. If you are thinking of volunteering – DO IT !

It has changed my life and it could change yours too.

Why did you need a 180 turn around?

When I first came to CrossFit 180 I was in a treatment centre and never been in a gym in my life. I’d been a drug addict for over 25 years, then in 2014 I collapsed and was rushed to hospital with an abscess on my heart, i ended up needing 3 heart operations and a valve replacement to save my life.

Three things that have changed since you came to 180?

  • My mental health.

  • Physical health.

  • My motivation to do things out my comfort zone.

What has been your highlight?

Without a shadow of a doubt the born survivor 10k assault course. I’d never of dreamt of doing that or even pushing myself to do that only a few months ago.

What would you say to someone who needed to make a 180 shift?

I would say never write yourself off and in the words of Winston Churchill “I’f you’re going through hell keep going
