180 Offer

We use CrossFit as the initial engagement method combined with education, life coaching and practical skill development, so people become physically, emotionally, mentally well and socially connected.

Why crossfit?

CrossFit is a way of life

CrossFit is unlike anything else for people who want to make a sustainable lifestyle change.

Purpose

CrossFit provides a new positive focus. It sets measurable goals and people can visibly see their progress.

Community

CrossFit creates a new community that is safe, encouraging and accepting. It's not like going to a gym where you don't have to talk or even look at anyone, CrossFit training is a team effort. Train together, recovery together.

Health

Rebuilding health and creating respect for your body and what it needs is critical to a good recovery. Balance of mind, body, and spirit leads to success in behaviour change.

Dedication

Much like any behaviour change process, CrossFit requires dedication and perseverance. Week after week, people find that they can handle more than they ever thought they could.

Opportunity

The sense of achievement through CrossFit is phenomenal and allows people to see their own potential. This opens up new opportunities: new friendships, new hobbies, new jobs.

Identity

It is so easy to attach a label to someone, limiting their self-belief and potential. CrossFit helps produce a new identity away from negative labels. Strong. Fit. Healthy. Determined. Committed. Athlete.

High on life

High intensity exercise triggers positive chemicals like serotonin. Releasing those chemicals through exercise makes people feel more positive… high on life.

Why choose us?

Combining our professional and personal experiences

The idea for The 180 Project came from a few individuals who attended CrossFit and who worked in the fields of substance misuse, mental health, the criminal justice system and people in recovery from mental health challenges and addiction.

We identified that an adapted CrossFit programme had the ability to give focus and hope to people who’ve been in and out of services, offenders in the system and those recovering from addiction and mental health. We formed The 180 Project volunteer team combining our professional and personal experiences, including a Head Coach who is a leader in the field of CrossFit training.

How do we know it works?

We've already run pilots for ex-offenders in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. We have evidence that this works.

We take a whole person approach and aim to positively impact an individual – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.

Athletes are asked to complete a series of questionnaires to measure psychological impact (self-confidence, levels of optimism, coping capabilities) and social impact through the five ways to well-being:

  1. Be active. I am interested in keeping physically well and active.

  2. Connection. I feel comfortable and confident to talk to people, and feel part of a community that cares about me.

  3. Take notice. I have a thirst to know more and learn new things to 'Be the best me' and to apply these for the future.

  4. Keep learning. I am interested how I can eat well and maintain a healthy diet.

  5. Give. I am interested in supporting others to do well.
